- Have a clear out beforehand
This doesn’t mean get rid of every prized possession you own, but make sure you try and eliminate as many unused and unnecessary items as you can. Any items that you have decided to declutter, hold a garage sale or give your old unwanted items to charity. The more items you get rid of the less stuff you will have to pack up unpack and organise - so it is a win-win!
2) Pack one room at a time
If you are wondering how to start parking, then a sensible starting point would be to start in the rooms you use the least in the house, leaving everyday items until the day before the move. Rooms such as the spare bedroom, garage or attic are usually easy places to start, as none of them will contain essential items. Doing this will help you stay organised and will help you tell the movers, or anyone unloading, which box goes where.
3) Label your boxes
If you like to be extra organised, then one way you can do this is when buying your packing supplies, get several different colours of pens or sticky notes. Use them to colour code your boxes and containers according to the new room in which you’re going to put them. Also, always make sure to put the labels on the sides of the boxes - rather than the top - as this will make it easier to recognise them if they are stacked. By picking an easy-to-decipher code system for describing what’s in the box and where it should go, you will save yourself a lot of hassle when trying to locate a particular item later.
4) Put heavier boxes on the bottom
By putting your heavy boxes underneath the lighter boxes, you ensure no breakable items will get crushed during the move. You want your boxes to have a lower centre of gravity to prevent the boxes from tipping over unexpectedly. It may take longer, but it’s worth spending that time to arrange your boxes and stack them properly.
5) Make a priority box
This priority box will be loaded with the items that you need the night you move in and the morning after. There are some things that you will need sooner than others once you arrive in your new home. Things like your most used kitchen supplies, bathroom supplies, chargers, and medicine.
6) Carefully wrap breakables
Taking the time to properly wrap your breakables could mean the difference in whether or not they arrive in one piece. Some top tips are; as you pack your dishes, put packing paper around each one, and then wrap bundles of five or six together with more paper. Cups and bowls can be placed inside one another, with paper in between, and wrapped three or four in a bundle.
